Albert Scruggs
Born: May 1857 Died: July 2, 1900
According to historical records, Albert Scruggs was 20 years old when he and his mother, Biddie Scruggs, purchased a parcel of land containing 35 acres in the County of Appomattox, Virginia. They brought the land from Charles A. Abbitt and his wife, Elvira, for $75. The purchase was made on Wednesday, November 28, 1877, the day before Thanksgiving, and only twelve short years after the Civil War ended in Appomattox on April 9, 1865.
The land or the “Old Homeplace” has remained in the family. It is the “inheritance” from the past that we strive to protect today and pass on to future generations. We can better understand who we are by recognizing where we came from and the heritage passed down through the generations. We can also commit to honor, celebrate, and share our family stories, rich history, traditions, and collective achievements.
